As they travel east, Moonflower's hope for a new family soon turns to terror when she finds she is not their guest, but their prisoner – the brothers chose to be what they are, relishing the slaughter, and her death and rebirth fifteen years ago have deep significance for them.

But they aren’t alone on the road. FBI agent Sarah McGrath, haunted by the death of her partner, Marc Donner, moments after he killed Rebecca, is beginning to wonder if he was right about the Carters all along. When a fresh trail of bodies emerges she is increasingly convinced of one thing.
